8-18-10 42lb Yellowtail and More!

Just giving you guys a little update in the fishing world. Catalina, Clemente, and Santa Barbara still are producing both yellowtail and white seabass. Although the weather has been a bit on the colder side, the fish are still there. Fishing has been slower this week as anglers are keeping their eyes and ears open for any information on our local tuna. So far, nothing has showed up yet.

But on the brighter side of things, squid continues to be found at the islands and island fishing still continues to produce fish. We are also coming up on a new full moon next week so fishing should improve. Our most recent trip over to Santa Barbara island produced 8 white sea bass and 1 big yellowtail. This was actually a goof off trip as me and the crew went out and did some recon work. The yellowtail made some news and it was a personal best for me at 42 pounds.

A few days later we had a local 3/4 day charter and as usual, we caught limits of those huge Salmon Groupers and limits of sculpin as well. One of the passengers posted the report on another website which this is the cut out from his report:

Nothing better than catching fish is being with your buddies catching fish! Six of us went on a private six pack charter on the Spectra out of Pier Point Landing, Long Beach. I heard so many great praise about the Spectra from my fishing buddies, that I wanted to go try it out. I was looking for a local boat that was a great boat and and had an awesome crew. Well I found it! The SPECTRA. My friend Matt setup the trip and we got our six pack together: Uiki, Dillon, Chris, Paul, Matt and I.

We Began the day of the trip meeting the Spectra Crew who were friendly and very helpful. The Crew was Captain Chris, Ted, Dennis and owner Billy. Wow, so many crew members for us! That’s one deck hand for every two fisherman. Where can you get service like that? I fished alot of nice boats and the Spectra was one of the best crews! The boat was great with enough room to move around and be in comfort!

This years summer fishing has been terrible! Seems like we were fishing winter all over again! I was anticipating fishing the bottom for whatever was down there since the water temp read 54 degrees! Captain Chris said he will get us on some big fish and for us to enjoy the trip. We headed out as we ate breakfest and enjoyed the smooth ride. Once on the location, the Crew- Dennis had all our rods setup and even put the bait on our hooks! Dam that’s service and he always had a smile! We drifted and dropped down 300 ft…two minutes later my Homeboy Matt hooks it up, then Paul hooks up, then Dillon hooks up,,then Chris and Uiki hooks up…then finally me! Hard strikes!!! I could not believe with my eyes how big these Salmon Groupers were! Especially being caught in our own backyard. You would have to drive down to San Diego to catch something like this! The biggest fish caught and released for the day was a Cow Cod that was about 20 pounds or more. I only seen those in Mexico, never around here. After catching our limits, we headed to another hot spot and caught our limits of Sculpins and ended the day with a nice lunch! All of us had a great time! One of the best fishing experience I had in a long time! The crew was world class! For those of you thats been on the Spectra you know what I am talking about! See you out in the water. ~Tom

8-8-10 Spectra Sportfishing with limits of White Seabass and Excellent Local Action

We had a great week of fishing at the local hot spots and all three islands. We met some really great new friends on these trips and had a great time on all. We all know fishing has not been the best but every day is a different day and we really try hard to put our customers on fish. When we fished Clemente, the yellows were there, and we were able to land 1 of 4 but they were not in a feeding frenzy. Calico bass fishing still remains excellent on the back side. Water temp was right between 65-66… On the following trip we opted another island in search of some exotics. The open party trip of 5 guys produced 8 White Sea bass, 7 Sheepshead and 2 Calicos. All the customers agreed to release all the big sheepshead and most of the calico bass that were caught. Great practice.

One of our local charters was a special charter for kids. The charter master , Matt, brought out five kids who wanted to try fishing and they ended up loving it. We took them to our usual honey holes to get the kids on some bent rods. They all love it and had a blast. All smiles across their faces. Simple Double reversed dropper loops did the job. Local water does seem a bit cold for this time of season. Right around 62.

The following trip after that produced one of the biggest local lings I have ever seen. It tipped the scales at 37lbs. Truly a big fish. The fish was caught by the father-son team Bob and Grayson Keleman. Again on their trip, they brought a bunch of young kids who wanted to do some fishing. They had such a great time learning how to fish and by the end of the day, they caught fish all on their own. Local fishing as still been a little inconsistent with the sand bass and barracuda action. In the mean time, to fill the sacks and keep the kids busy, the rockfish and sculpin are still biting well. The following trip, Judy Rose from Arizona had chartered the boat for her family. Fish counts have been ok but like I said, everyday is a new day. They ended up going to santa barbara island and catching full limits of White Sea bass for passengers and crew. Total count for the trip was 30 White Sea bass, 1 Halibut, 20 Calico bass all released), and a handful of big sheep head which were all released as well. They had a trip of a lifetime. She was so pleased with the boat and the operation that I had to share this email with you guys:

The following trip, Roy came out with his 3 friends again and wanted to try some sea bass fishing. His group of 4 anglers ended up bringing home 6 White Sea Bass and a bag full of the regular calicos and sheep head. One of our most used rigs is simply the Aki Hook with a 3/8 egg sinker. Simple yet very effective. Fishing has been very tough but you just have to be out there as much as you can. Finding the right conditions is what it is all about.

7-26-10 Another Great Weekend of Fishing!

Hello Spectra Fans,

We had another great week of fishing and catching Catalina Island has been so ” on or off.” We started to look around at the other islands a little more and found some fish. The weather has been very nice, plenty of sunshine.

The open party trip with 4 anglers resulted in 6 White Sea bass, Lots of jumbo size sheephead, and limit style fishing on the calico bass, and 1 very nice halibut caught by Brian Le. The calico bass fishing has been simply amazing. Both our groups threw back almost all the calicos besides the ones that were gut hooked were kept.

I cannot emphasize to you guys how much spectra line has helped us. Being able to work through the kelp and helped us be more effective with fishing the kelp.

On our 2 day trip, unfortunately on our first day, we lost our anchor over at Santa Barbara due to some stubborn rocks that wanted the anchor more than we did. They lost their anchor at 11 am and had to head back to Catalina right away so I could drop off that anchor for them. I ended up getting a ride on Bobby Lineo’s Everglades to deliver the new anchor. Thanks Bobby. Got to the back side of Catalina in about an hour from Alamitos Bay.

Once the boys got the new anchor, they stuck around Catalina to see if an afternoon bite developed but nothing to show for their efforts. So back over to SBI they went.

And for the fish count, they ended up with 9 sea bass to 34 pounds, limits of calico bass and limits of sheephead for both days and, a few Cabazon in the mix. Really quality fish too. Some of the calicos topped the scales right around 8 pounds with the average being 3 to 4 pounds. The sheephead fishing has been phenomenal. We got 1 right around 20lbs and a handful in the 15 lb range. These guys were really great about releasing most of the calicos and big sheephead. Everyone went home with healthy sacks of fillets.

All in all, a great trip for everyone. It seems like fishing is really starting to turn on everywhere. Albacore are biting, San Clemente putting out some nice counts of yellowtail, along with the sea bass action at Catalina, great sand bass action locally………..so really good fishing.

Well we have 2 open party trips for this weekend. We are either going to Catalina or San Clemente depending on how things go.

Also we have our first exploratory shark trip leaving Thursday at 3pm returning anywhere from Midnight to 1 or 2 AM. The Trip cost is $150. Great time to come out and just enjoy the ocean. Relax and have a beer with your buddies and lets see if we can get some Sharks on the boat.

The fish gods have been very kind to us. Fishing the last few weeks has been good. Although we have had trips that were not as great, we definitely put in the effort to try to find the fish and make our customers happy. Catalina has been on and off at best, which leads to us doing some exploration to the other islands. Making squid has been easy and still consistent. We only make bait about once or twice a week because of our large slammers, in one night we can keep about 40 scoops of bait which lasts us through the week. The kelp cutter rigs (all spectra, short top shot of fluoro) has been extremely productive. Being able to land those fish up tight to the kelp has definitely helped us. Spectra is becoming a household item for all fishermen in their tackle arsenal.

We have primarily been fishing that with 30lb flouro and a 3/8 sliding egg sinker with an Owner Aki Twist hook.

Our last trip, we were able to catch 5 White sea bass, limits of sheepshead to 21.5 pounds, excellent calico bass fishing with 1 fish weighing in at 10.4 pounds and 1 halibut. Although fishing was great, we did not keep everything we caught as we had plenty of fish in the cooler for the customers.

It was excellent sheep head fishing. We caught 10 over 15lbs and 2 over 20lbs. I’m glad I was on this trip to witness such a site. We were just releasing one after another. The previous days trips resulted in another pair of sea bass and a really healthy yellowtail.

I am very thankful for the support I have had from the message boards and all the anglers that has come out to fish our boat. Thank you once again, the crew of Spectra Sportfishing really appreciates it.

7-3-10 Another Day of White Seabass Limits

Well, the last few weeks has been really hot! Conditions are just getting better and better. With it comes the great fishing as well. The white seabass had slowed down a bit and we had our ups and downs. There was definetly heavy heavy traffic at Catalina but we were able to break away from the crowds and find some fish. It was a bit lumpy on the ride over but was very nice the rest of day. We already were tanked up with live squid with the slammers full as well. They come in handy!

Fish bit wide open for about 3 hours and we managed to get limits for the 6 passengers and 6 more for the crew so a total of 24 white seabass. The sheep head bit really well too and we were able to get 5 of those models and 2 halibut to boot. Some days are a hit and miss but when they do hit, it goes wide open. All fish were caught on the sliding egg sinker rig. It was all about the conditions.

It was a great trip and I will let the pictures take over. THIS FISH ARE BITING….

Angler Jeff Cooke, of Aliso Viego, was fishing at Catalina Island the weekend of June 12. He was looking to catch a trophy sized white seabass. He thought his wait was over when his rod bent, and the crew declared he had hooked the “right kind”. Their prediction was confirmed at that moment you can first get a glimpse of the fish at deep color through the frequently murky waters where the prized sportfish congregate in the spring and early summer months. Seconds later, the line went limp. Cooke had lost his prize, an estimated 45-50 pound seabass.

Two weeks later, Saturday night, June 19, Cooke boarded a 976-Tuna charter on the Spectra out of Pierpoint Landing in Long Beach. He and his two fishing buddies agreed to each chip in twenty dollars, to go to the angler on the trip that scored the biggest fish.

The bait tanks were already loaded with some live squid. At the island, none of the light boats had any to sell, so the crew fished with nets for the prized “candy bait”. Just before dawn the passengers were called out on deck to start fishing. With no response by sunrise, Captain Jack moved around from one small cove to next along the rocky shores of Catalina Island, looking for the right conditions among dozens of sandy beaches. In one of those spots afternoon, an angler landed a seabass just over 30 pounds. The fish tend to travel in schools; one usually means there are others in the area, and that set off a rush of adrenaline among the angers. Seconds after the first fish was on the deck, Cooke hooked up. After a trip around the boat, fish dragging angler, it took two of the crew to gaff and drag the fish over the rail. But Cooke had his prize.

The fish weighed in at a whopping 59 pounds.

Cooke, unchallenged by his two friends, went home with the $60, and a lifetime worth of bragging rights.

6-24-10 52 White Seabass! Amazing 3 Day Trip to Catalina Island

We left early on Monday for an adventure over at Catalina Island. Captain Jack Della Corte was at the helm and had brought two of his friends that were from out of town and one of our new regulars, Teera. This was one of our first multi day trips and it turned out well.

Long story short, we were able to have some of the best WSB fishing I have ever seen. We caught fish everyday. Mostly through the tide change. On first day, the refrigeration went out and we did not have a lot of ice to keep the fish cool and fresh. We tried to trouble shoot on the water, but no luck….Damn, this only happens when you need it most! Jack was able to make a phone call back to the landing in hopes that one of the other boats was leaving for an overnight trip and maybe they could bring us some ice. A BIG BIG THANK YOU to the Toronado for bringing us loads of ice. They pulled up to us around 4 am. I didnt even hear them as I was dead tired and the boys stayed up late cleaning all the fish to fit the filets in the cooler. We ended the trip with 52 WSB for the 6 of us. 3 of the passengers got their 3 day limit and the crew split the rest. Truly an epic trip.
